There were plenty of winners across the ITF Tours last week. Quite a few players won their first title, while others, such as Katie Swan, won their 17th. But there is perhaps no better story than the Brazilian, Joaquim Almeida, who took out his first ITF event of his career. Almeida shouldn’t have even been in the tournament. He was 28th on the alternate list for qualifying. Somehow, enough players pulled out, and he found himself in the event.
Not only did he win his 2 qualifying matches, but he then reeled off 5 more matches in a row, saving 8 match points along the way, to have the biggest week of his career.
