Ten ATP Challenger Events Worth Visiting

Forget the Masters and the Slams, for the hardcore tennis fan, Challenger events is where the real fun is at.

I’ve been lucky enough to attend dozens in previous years, but there are a heap that I’d love to get to one day. I wanted to compile this list of the 10 events that I think are worth making the effort to go to, if you get the chance. Most of these I haven’t attended, but they’re on my wishlist!

Braunschweig, Germany

10. Mexico City

Located in the heart of Mexico City, the stadium is a ripper. The spectators all have a great view, and the players feel like the crowd is almost on top of them. Mexico City is the biggest city in North America, so you would expect there’s plenty do away from the court too.

9. Phoenix

While never really on my radar as a destination, the fact that Phoenix now hosts a 175 event, means it is now firmly on the tournaments worth visiting. With a red hot field worthy of a 250 event, this would make a great stop during the second week of Indian Wells.

8. Tampere

Many reasons to come here. Firstly, Finland is awesome. But second, Tampere is the longest running Challenger event, dating back to 1982. Held in the heart of the European summer, who wouldn’t want to visit?

7. Szczecin

Poland do Challengers right. Three times, this event has been named Challenger event of the year. And for good reason. The crowds that attend year after year, are phenomenal. With activities and events held off court during the week, including a Music Garden, and a Kids day, this tournament looks and feels like a mini (very mini) major.

6. Lugano

I was lucky enough to attend this tournament during its iteration as an outdoor event, when centre court was located right along side Lake Lugano. Now it’s an indoor event held in March, so while it probably isn’t quite as exciting as a summer event, if you’ve ever been to Lugano, you’ll know why it’s on the list. A stunning place to visit at any time, but if you can watch some tennis while you’re there, why not?

5. Poznan

Another long-running Polish event, that attracts the local and international crowds. Packed stands, quality fields, and off court entertainment during the European summer, is the perfect mix for a Challenger event.

4. Surbiton

There aren’t many grass court events on the calendar, and as I’ve been to Wimbledon a few times, the next best has to be Surbiton I suppose! This event kicks off the grass season, and always draws a nice field. Set in South-West London, next to the Thames, it seems like the perfect location for an afternoon’s tennis to me.

3. Santiago

Chile fans are crazy. In a good way. Whenever a Chilean is competing at the Aussie Open, you’ll hear them from 6 courts away. I can’t imagine how exciting it would be to watch them play on their home deck. The stands always seem full, and the atmosphere looks amazing. Not to mention Chile is an awesome country to explore while there.

2. Noumea

Probably less about the tournament setup, and the fields, than the location. I mean, the middle of the South Pacific, with the Coral Sea just metres away, warm temperatures, and only a few hours from Australia. It sounds pretty idyllic to me.

1. Braunschweig

I’ve attended this event on numerous occasions, and it never disappoints. Big crowds, big off court atmosphere, and high quality fields (Thomas Muster played his comeback match here), in a small town setting, is exactly what Challenger events should be. It’s also been named Challenger Tournament of the year 5 times! Add to that, the time of year, smack bang in the middle of the German summer, and it’s my number one event you should get to.
